The Triton was a sailing ship in the novel Moby Dick written by Herman Melville. Melville was an American writer best known for his novel Moby Dick which was written in 1851 and is one of the most famous and influential novels in the United States. The novel is about a man named Ishmael who is invited aboard a whaling ship called the Pequod to be trained as a harpooner. The novel is set off the New England coast in the year 1851 and also during this time there was a great deal of anxiety about the whale population, which were hunted for oil and other valuable resources.

The captain of the Pequod, Ahab, was obsessed with destroying the great white whale that had attacked his ship because it had been harpooned earlier that year. After a series of adventures, Ishmael ends up deserting the Pequod and takes a boat to join a whaling ship named after Starbuck, the only person he had befriended on board.
